Referee apologises for incorrect decision
"Newcastle midfielder Jermaine Jenas has had the red card he received yesterday against Arsenal downgraded to a yellow.
Referee Steve Bennett cited Jenas's use of "excessive force" as the reason for dismissing the player, but revised his decision after viewing video evidence of the incident. Jenas was shown a straight red for a tackle on Gilberto Silva, but Bennett has now been convinced that the England midfielder made contact with the ball before his trailing leg caught the Arsenal midfielder. A Newcastle statement read: "Steve Bennett has been in touch via letter with manager Graeme Souness, Jermaine Jenas and the rest of the squad to apologise for his error of judgement during Sunday's game against Arsenal."
The FA granted Bennett's request to reduce Jenas's punishment, who will now avoid serving the mandatory three-match suspension. The decision vindicates the stance of Newcastle manager Graeme Souness, who was adamant that the referee had made a mistake in sending off his player."
